LOOKING FOR SPECIAL ADOPTER! Obi is a beautiful 4 year old boy who was surrendered to the rescue in April 2022 due to resource guarding (food, treats, high value toys) and fear of unfamiliar people. (These behaviors are actually not uncommon with livestock guardian breeds, and normally resolve with maturity and owners learning how to best help the dog through the earlier bonding period.) After arrival, Obi slowly formed good relations with multiple staff members. In the summer of 2023, he began developing severe scabbing, primarily on his nose, above his eyes, and on the edges of his ears. As this got worse, he began to show increasing irritability when interacting with people. This was most likely a result of pain from the lesions on his nose. After several visits to the vet, he was diagnosed as having DISCOID (CUTANEOUS) LUPUS ERYTHEMATOSUS and was started on a higher dose of Prednisone tablets, gradually tapering to a lower maintenance dose. The scabs have been steadily resolving, and Obi's behavior has improved tremendously. Although he has improved significantly, this condition can possibly flare up throughout his lifetime, requiring occasional veterinary follow-up for medication adjustments. We now believe we can begin searching for his perfect forever home. ONCE HE LEARNS HE CAN TRUST SOMEONE, OBI IS A WONDERFUL BOY WHO LOVES TUMMY RUBS, GOING FOR WALKS AND CAR RIDES, AND SHORT PLAY SESSIONS. TO HAVE THE BEST CHANCE OF A SUCCESSFUL ADOPTION, Obi probably needs a quieter home. If children are present, they should be older, calmer, and able to learn how to watch his body language and give him space when he indicates he is uncomfortable. He has gotten along with some other dogs while at the rescue, as long as they are not too energetic and are good at backing off if he indicates he is done playing. Adopter should live in their own house (no townhouses, condos, or apartments) with a minimum of a six-foot high, solid fence (wood or PVC). Experience with Great Pyrenees and dogs who have trust issues is a plus. We think it would be better if the adopter LIVES IN THE COLORADO SPRINGS/PEYTON AREA AND/OR BE WILLING TO COME OUT TO THE RESCUE A MINIMUM OF ONCE A WEEK TO SPEND 1:1 TIME WITH OBI TO GET TO KNOW HIM, LEARN HOW TO READ HIS BODY LANGUAGE, AND EARN HIS TRUST PRIOR TO DECIDING IF OBI IS THE DOG FOR THEM. THIS MAY TAKE MULTIPLE VISITS OVER SEVERAL WEEKS. RESCUE STAFF WILL HELP PROVIDE TRAINING TO ASSIST THE POTENTIAL ADOPTER(S) DURING THIS TIME.
